Embracing Your Inner Artist – Why It’s Time to Start Your Art Career Now

I remember the first time I picked up a paintbrush (an Apple Pencil – LOL). The blank canvas stared back at me, a world of possibilities waiting to be explored. I hesitated, doubting whether anyone would appreciate what I had to offer. I certainly wasn’t an ARTIST yet.
After a while, I thought, “Why not?” Art is entirely subjective—what one person sees as a masterpiece, another might pass by without a second glance. But here’s the beauty of it: someone will like it, and someone will pay for it.
Meet Corbell – The Everyday Artist Making Bank

Let me introduce you to someone who embodies this spirit perfectly—Corbell, an artist based in Los Angeles but selling his art from Florida. I’m not sure where he lives, to be honest.
I’m not even sure he exists as the person, to be honest. I can’t find any information about him other than his eBay postings.
He didn’t wait for the perfect moment or the ideal inspiration. Instead, he started cranking out oil paintings daily, immersing himself in the creative process. He works across a variety of styles like Abstract, Cubism, Impressionism, and even coined his unique style he calls “Corbellic Cubism.”
What’s astonishing is that his work is, by many standards, quite generic. It just doesn’t speak to me for the most part – at all. Yet, he’s sold over 13,000 items on eBay, many of them paintings. Most of his 16×20 oil paintings sell for under $60.

So, in a worst-case scenario, he made $50 on average per painting. That’s pretty good when you sell 13,000 paintings! $650,000 probably as a worst-case scenario. I don’t know how long he has been selling on eBay, but even if it’s 10 years, that’s still $65K per year income from paintings. That’s great money and beyond what 99% of artists make with just selling their art.
No joke, he sells most oil paintings for under $60. But don’t let the price tag fool you. The volume of his sales speaks volumes about the appeal of his work. He’s even sold a few pieces for over $1,000 and $2,000 USD. Hell, you can find Picasso oil paintings for a few thousand dollars on eBay!.
The Undeniable Power of Consistency and Passion
So, what’s his secret? Consistency and passion. Corbell paints every single day. Some days, his work might not be groundbreaking, but other days, he creates something truly remarkable. The key takeaway here is that by showing up and doing the work, he increases his chances of producing something that resonates with people.
Imagine having 2,000 paintings listed on eBay right now, like Corbell does. The sheer volume increases the likelihood that someone, somewhere, will connect with one of your pieces. Art isn’t about perfection – it’s about expression and connection.
Art is for Everyone
You might be thinking, “But I’m not as talented as professional artists,” or “I don’t have a unique style.” Guess what? Neither did many artists when they started. The idea that you need to be exceptionally gifted or have a revolutionary style to succeed is a myth that holds so many back.
Art is not reserved for a select few, it’s a universal language that we all can speak. Your perspective is unique simply because it’s yours. There’s an audience out there waiting to see the world through your eyes.
Start with Keeping Your Art Simple
One of the most liberating aspects of Corbell’s approach is his simplicity. He doesn’t rely on expensive materials or complicated techniques. Using standard oil paints and brushes, he focuses on the act of creation rather than the tools themselves.
This is a crucial lesson for aspiring artists. You don’t need the most expensive supplies to create meaningful art. Start with what you have, and let your creativity fill in the gaps.
Connecting with Buyers Online – USA and Worldwide
Corbell primarily sells his work on eBay, a global marketplace that connects him with buyers from all over the world. By leveraging online platforms, he’s bypassed traditional gatekeepers like galleries and art dealers. This direct-to-consumer approach allows him to reach a wider audience and sell his work on his own terms.
Have you considered where you might sell your art?
The internet has made it easier than ever to share your work with the world. Platforms like Etsy, eBay, and even social media sites can serve as your virtual gallery.
The Myth of the Starving Artist

We’ve all heard the term “starving artist,” but Corbell’s story flips that narrative on its head. By pricing his work affordably and producing consistently, he’s found a way to make a living from his passion for making oil paintings.
This challenges the notion that artists can’t be financially successful unless they “make it big.” There are countless people out there who appreciate art and are willing to pay for pieces that speak to them, even if they’re not from a famous artist or housed in a renowned gallery.
Taking the First Step – Make Art Now
What’s holding you back from starting your art career? Is it fear of rejection? Doubt about your abilities? Remember, every artist started somewhere. The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t often comes down to the willingness to take that first step.
Corbell didn’t wait for validation or a sign from the universe. He began creating and put his work out there for others to see. And guess what? People responded.
Your Unique Voice Matters
Art is a form of personal expression. Your experiences, emotions, and perspectives are unique to you. By sharing your art, you’re contributing something new to the world.
Don’t underestimate the value of your voice. Even if your style isn’t fully developed or your skills aren’t where you’d like them to be, there’s someone out there who will connect with what you create.
Embracing Failure – You Won’t Sell All Your Art!

Not every piece you create will be a masterpiece, and that’s okay. Failure is an inherent part of the creative process. Each “unsuccessful” piece is a stepping stone toward finding your voice and refining your skills.
Corbell likely has paintings that didn’t sell or didn’t turn out as planned. But he didn’t let that stop him. Instead, he kept creating, learning, and growing.
Building Your Body of Work
Consider starting a daily or weekly practice of creating art. Over time, you’ll build a substantial body of work. Not only does this increase your chances of making sales, but it also allows you to see your own growth and evolution as an artist.
Corbell’s extensive portfolio didn’t appear overnight. It was the result of consistent effort and dedication. You have the power to do the same.
Engaging with the Art Community
While Corbell primarily sells online, engaging with the local art community can provide additional opportunities. Art shows, local galleries, and community events are great places to showcase your work and connect with other artists and art enthusiasts.
These interactions can offer valuable feedback, inspiration, and even collaborative opportunities. Plus, they help you build a network that can support your artistic journey.
The Accessibility of Art Today
We live in an era where the barriers to entering the art world are lower than ever. With the internet, you can showcase your work to a global audience without needing representation from galleries or agents.
Take advantage of social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok to share your process and finished pieces. These platforms allow you to build a following and connect directly with potential buyers.
Inspiration is Everywhere
Look around you. Inspiration can be found in the mundane and the extraordinary—in nature, urban landscapes, people, and even in other forms of art like music and literature.
Carry a sketchbook or use your phone to jot down ideas whenever inspiration strikes. This habit keeps your creative juices flowing and provides a reservoir of ideas to draw from when you’re ready to create.

Figuring out what you LIKE TO DRAW and create is a primary source of pain for artists everywhere. Even people who are already YouTube stars are constantly wondering – what is my style? How can I figure out my style?
Your style comes as you first decide WHAT TO DRAW – WHAT TO PAINT?
Then you do it YOUR WAY.
Most artists feel shy about showing their art at first. Some for their entire lives. Be like Corbell – he’s not shy in the least to show art that children could have made! This is certainly inspiring for me because though I could make some of his pieces with my eyes closed, a lot of the others I don’t have the skills yet.
Build your confidence over time. Then MAKE THE LEAP!
Your Art Career Starts Today
There’s no perfect moment to start your art career. Waiting for the stars to align will only delay your journey. Like Corbell, you can start right now, with whatever resources you have at your disposal.
Remember, someone out there is waiting to see the world through your art. Don’t deny them—or yourself—that opportunity.
Art is a journey of self-discovery and expression. It’s about connecting with others on a deeper level and sharing pieces of yourself with the world. Corbell’s story is a testament to what can happen when you embrace your passion and put yourself out there.
So pick up that brush, pencil, or tablet. Start creating. The world is waiting to see what you have to offer.
Disclaimer – I know very little about the man calling himself Corbell. A Google search shows nothing. I can’t even find his first name. I can see a huge number of sales on eBay and can only see what 1,000 or so sales were. Many were paintings. I have no reason to doubt he is selling like crazy, not only on eBay but probably other platforms as well. He is quite successful! I don’t think he’s one of the greatest artists to ever live, but he’s making his mark and he’s making a living! I strongly believe most of us can do the same. How? By doing. Start now. In less than a year you could have 100 paintings for sale on eBay – or wherever you choose. In one year, you could have 250 paintings for sale and at least a few hundred dollars in sales.
Isn’t that what you want?
